4th Winter School on Biomedical Optics (WiSBO '26-27) - IIITDM Kancheepuram, Chennai

Biomedical optics has become one of the most important fields in recent research on clinical diagnosis and treatment. This course covers the fundamentals of biomedical optics, from how a photon interacts with a single atom, to diatomic species, and then polyatomic species such as haemoglobin. You will learn the basics of spectroscopy and imaging modalities such as fluorescence, UV-Vis-NIR, diffuse optics, polarization, speckle contrast, and multimodal imaging, along with fundamentals and advances in optical biosensors and plasmonic resonances. The school also includes principles and demonstrations of brightfield, phase contrast, fluorescence and polarization-based microscopy. The Department of Electronics and Communication, IIITDM Kancheepuram, is organizing the 4th Edition of Winter School on Biomedical Optics (WiSBO '26-27) at IIITDM Kancheepuram, Chennai, from 27 to 30 December 2026. Participants (about 40-50) will be PhD students, faculty members, and industry participants working in biomedical optics across India. Thrust areas 1. Biophotonics and Sensing: radiative transfer, Monte Carlo techniques, tissue polarimetry, optical fiber sensing; optical biosensors - plasmonics, SPR, LSPR, SPP, Raman spectroscopy, SERS, SORS; introduction to AI in medical imaging. 2. Spectroscopy Methods in Life Science: Vis-NIR-MIR, Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy. 3. Tissue Imaging and Image Processing: diffuse optical imaging, laser speckle imaging, fluorescence, optical coherence tomography, photoacoustic imaging, medical image processing, feature extraction, and biostatistics for clinical diagnosis. 4. Microscopic Imaging: polarization-based, phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy, and nanoscopy. Who can apply UG (B.E./B.Tech), PG (M.Tech/M.E./M.Sc/MBBS) students and PhD scholars from universities/institutions in India, faculty, and industry members in relevant fields.
